The Curzon Cinema/CrossRail 2

Save Soho’s letter of Objection to CrossRail 2

Dear Sir or Madam,

The Curzon Soho has been one of the busiest and best loved art house cinemas in the West End since it opened in 1985. Voted London’s Number One cinema by Time Out readers, the three-screen complex, with its fully licensed bar and cafe areas, has been a massive cultural plus for Soho, as well as providing a great meeting and socialising point in London’s premier creative square mile.

There has been a cinema on this site since 1959. Curzon founder Harold Wingate had originally planned to open a sister cinema to his Mayfair screen, but in the end leased the site to Columbia Pictures. It became a venue for upmarket and art house movies in the 80s, but was only fully realised when Harold’s son Roger took possession and opened it as, originally, the Curzon West End, and after refurbishment, the Curzon Soho.

The cinema is extremely comfortable, brilliantly run with a great programming policy, and massively popular. It would be a mistake of gigantic proportions to demolish such a successful place. Crossrail 2 may provide transport benefits, but these cannot be at the expense of long-established entertainment sites such as the Curzon – one of the many reasons people wish to travel into Soho in the first place.

We have also heard that Crossrail 2 will effect Soho Square, becoming a depot for the Crossrail 2 workers. Soho Square is an iconic part of Soho and the only real open space in Soho. It is a thriving, flourishing square full of creative people. Do you really want to take this away from the community for 10-12 years and place portacabins there?

Save Soho joins the many other voices calling for Crossrail 2’s proposals to be closely examined, and in this case to be firmly rejected. Alternative solutions must be found, otherwise Soho faces yet another catastrophic cultural loss with very little gained in return.

Yours faithfully

One thought on “The Curzon Cinema/CrossRail 2”

  1. It would be a dreadful mistake to create Crossrail 2. London already has plenty of transport link but with the relentless destruction of sites such as the Curzon there will be nowhere left in Soho for anyone to visit. It is such gems as the Curzon that draw in tourists from around the world as well as people from the outskirts of London. The centre of London is losing its individuality. Soho Square will be destroyed, the cottage in the centre will not survive being the ‘home’ of the Crossrail builders not to mention that the people working in that area of London will no longer have an open space to enjoy. The businesses in the locality, such as the amazing Hare Krisna cafe Govindas will doubtless close. Save Soho, save the arts, save the independents…
